The Sanitation Collection department, a key part of Prescott's public works, handles a myriad of responsibilities that go far beyond what one might expect. Their primary duty, of course, is the collection of both residential and commercial trash. However, their job doesn't end there. This versatile crew also manages limb and Class 4 rubbish collection, and even takes on the solemn task of leveling graves in the city cemetery. Furthermore, they are an indispensable partner to other city services, often assisting the Street Department with tasks like clearing out culverts after heavy rains. The two departments frequently work together, showcasing a spirit of teamwork that benefits the entire city. These tasks are absolutely vital in safeguarding the public from potential diseases and safety hazards that can arise from waste accumulation.
Leading this essential team is Superintendent Chris Hopper. His effective leadership has been so valued that, as Prescott Mayor Terry Oliver noted, he was put in charge of both the Street and Sanitation departments, because he did such an exceptional job. Hopper's pride in his team and their recent accomplishments is evident. A significant point of pride is the department's new initiative to roll out dumpsters for local businesses and residents. For years, all commercial collection was done by hand, a labor-intensive process. “We are finally getting into the dumpster business for our businesses and our residents,” Hopper said.
This modernization, which began just a few weeks ago, makes collection more efficient for the city and provides a great benefit to local businesses, who can now manage their waste more effectively. “It’s something to be proud of,” Hopper added, acknowledging the positive impact on his crew and the community. "This team has always worked hard for our citizens and this is just another way they can serve."
The importance of the Sanitation Department cannot be overstated. Without their consistent and reliable service, the health and safety of the community would be compromised in a matter of days. Their work is a foundational component of a functioning city, contributing directly to an environment that is clean, healthy, and inviting. This, in turn, supports local economic development and tourism, integral components of our way of life.
