The Politically Correct Watermelon-eating contest for 2025 is history: learn who won
At noon on 49th Annual Hope Watermelon Festival Saturday, the Politically Correct Watermelon-eating contest, which has enticed governors, senators and congresscritters of all stripes to compete took place on the Southwest Arkansas Regional Medical Center stage.

A video of the contest can be seen just below this story.

Interim Chancellor Laura Clark, of University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana did the hosting as a row of eminences took up quarter slices of orange deliciousness as the temperature creeped toward 90 degrees.  Once the go signal sounded, Sheriff James I. Singleton did about four seconds of work and threw his rind down in triumph, winning another of his several contests.  He has gone undefeated.

Second place went to Karen Smith, Hempstead County Clerk.  Third, to State Representative Dolly Henley, whose district encompasses the vast majority of Hempstead and Nevada Counties.

After his victory, when asked what his strategy has been for winning so many such contests, Sheriff Singleton said, “It’s like I told somebody a long time ago, sometimes you have to get in there and root like an old hog.”

This was the ninth victory for Singleton, who is retiring from his position at the end of this year.  One candidate to succeed him, Deputy Justin Crane, took part in the contest as a cheerleader for his daughter, who did the eating in his stead.
