Tima Brown: Young & Thornton's broker in Hope with 15 years' experience meeting insurance needs
Before you ever ask what kind of insurance Tima Brown sells, you’ll notice the way she carries herself, like sunshine bottled in a smile, like confidence wrapped in kindness. Whether she’s walking into a business or greeting a client as they come in, she brings more than policies and paperwork. She brings presence.

She’s the kind of woman who makes you feel like you’ve known her forever, even if it’s your first-time meeting. That magnetic mix of warmth and wisdom, with a flash of wit in her eyes, tells you one thing right away: you’re in good hands.

With Tima Brown at Young & Thornton Insurance and Financial Planning LLC, she’s not just selling coverage, she’s building trust. From auto and home to life, health, and commercial policies, she walks clients through the tough stuff with clarity and care. Because to her, insurance isn’t just a transaction, it’s protection for the people and dreams that matter most.

But beyond the office and the paperwork, she’s the reason clients keep coming back. She listens. She remembers names. She sends handwritten notes. She shows up fully. And maybe that’s her real superpower, she makes business personal.

While Brown’s warmth and approachability are immediately evident, it’s her in-depth industry knowledge that sets her apart. With a background in legal studies and years of experience in insurance operations, she has developed a strong focus on employee benefits an area she says is both her specialty and her passion. In interviews, Brown outlined how she works with clients, what challenges they face, and how she aims to make coverage more understandable and accessible for businesses and individuals alike.

“I actually have a bit of a foundation here with a family that is very dear to me, so I’ve been in Hope quite a bit,” said Brown, who was born and raised in Texarkana. “I’ve worked here for years, but I’ve been that behind-the-scenes operations type person more than in the forefront. But the Young family led me right to where I’m at.”

Brown’s background in criminal justice and legal work including time as a paralegal working with contracts has helped her understand the fine print that matters in insurance.

“That is very important within the insurance industry,” she said. “Contracts, documentation, it all matters.”

She began her career primarily on the operations side of the business but moved into more client-facing work after her business partner, Mike Young, asked for help with a project one day.

“He just needed my help with some things, and I realized how much I really loved it,” she said. “It’s been 15 years now,”

Today, Brown along with her amazing team, specializes in health insurance and employee benefits, working with small businesses across the region. She says this area of insurance is especially complex and often misunderstood but she thrives in it.

“Employee benefits are actually my specialty and my passion,” she said. “I’m a super nerd when it comes to SBCs [Summaries of Benefits and Coverage] and plan comparisons, building payroll and employee enrollment platforms. I also offer customized employee handbooks, benefit booklets.”

She said many small business owners assume they’re locked into limited options, unaware that more tailored, affordable plans may be available.

“A lot of times small businesses, which you have a lot of around here, don’t realize they have options,” she explained. “So it’s really an educational piece. Once you get a few details, you can build a customized package. They might just want their own vision. You just really have to build a trusted, established relationship for them to know that you’ll do anything you can to help their employees. Most owners want to take care of their employees.”

Brown especially enjoys speaking directly with employees during enrollment periods, where she takes time to educate them on what their plans actually offer.

“That’s actually my favorite thing to do,” she said. “We have what we call group meetings prior to enrollment events, and I usually prepare depending on your audience slideshows, tangibles, whatever you need. But yes, that’s 100 percent my jam. I make time for open mic questions.”

Brown is currently in her tenth year of working in Hope and is preparing to open a dedicated office in the city. Though it won’t be a traditional walk-in location, it will give her a base of operations for the community she’s grown to love.

“It won’t be a walk-in, but it’ll be my own area, and a young lady has extended her kindness,” she said. “My number one thing is: you all have jobs. You don’t have time to come. So, I try to accommodate true service, not ‘I need you to get here before five o’clock.’ You’ve got kids. You probably have family. Sometimes you need to talk to somebody after six.”

Her own family includes 16 people: herself, “the most amazing husband in the world,” five children, and nine grandchildren. She said her main hobby is “grand-babies,” who often tag along with her to Hope for ice cream trips. She’s also beginning involvement with school-year projects at Beryl Henry Elementary.

“Hope has been very, very good to me,” Brown said. She called the city “a genuine extension of kindness.”
