Tonight at Hempstead Hall: a night of modern bluegrass
Coming to Hempstead Hall tonight are two bluegrass groups with different approaches to the traditional Appalachian-grown genre. East Nash Grass is a virtuosic sixsome, each member writing songs. The Cleverlys bring a more rollicking humor to their proceedings.

Beginning at 7:00 p.m., the concert features two Nashville acts that began their careers performing regularly at venues in the town. East Nash Grass started as a loose collection of blue grass musicians holding regular court at Dee’s Country Cocktail just east of town in the suburb of Madison. Gradually they formed a tight fivesome and started a path that has taken them all the way to the venerable Ryman Auditorium.

East Nash Grass’ latest album, Last Chance to Win, came out August 18 and, like their self-titled debut from 2021, can be found on streaming sites. A favorite of mine from Last Chance is “Starlet Iris,” which tells a sad story of unrequited love as instrumentalists exchange inventive lines from one side of the stage to another. Another song of theirs I’ve been taken by is “Katey Hill,” the video of which can be seen on the band’s website

The Cleverlys play bluegrass versions of rap, rock and pop songs, but they do so with full commitment, retaining their rural accents but vocalizing with total sincerity. Their version of Dr. Dre’s “No Diggity” is a marvel of precision in its arrangement and harmonies. What they make of Radiohead’s “Creep” is a gentle shuffle of troubadour melody, rife with singing guitar figurations.

There are still seats available, according to Hempstead Hall’s website. The show starts at 7:00 p.m.
