Two new showings opening at Historic Washington State Park on money, amusements

Several forms of currency that were used in Washington, Arkansas.

Two new exhibits have opened at the visitor center at Historic Washington State Park.
The “In Their Wallet” exhibit talks about the money that was used in Hempstead County during
the 19th century.

A bill from the Washington branch of the Arkansas Real Estate Bank in
Washington, Arkansas is on display along with several coins that have been discovered by
archeologists over the years.

The other exhibit “Amusements and Social Pleasures of
Washington” talks about the many different types of leisure people enjoyed in Hempstead
County in the 19th century. Did you know that a circus came to Hempstead County from New
York. Come out to see these exhibits and learn about the past history of Hempstead County.

The Hempstead County Historical Society will meet on Tuesday evening May 23, 2023
at the 1874 Courthouse Visitor Center located at 100 SW Morrison Street in Washington,
Arkansas at 7pm. Everyone is welcome.

The Historical Society seeks to bring awareness to the rich heritage and history of
