Understanding Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement found in 1 out of every 700 births. Babies are typically born with 46 chromosomes, but babies with Down syndrome have an extra copy of one of these chromosomes, chromosome 21. There’s even a medical term for having an extra copy of a chromosome: trisomy. The impact of Down syndrome varies, but it usually causes intellectual and physical disability.

World Down Syndrome Day is March 21 — here’s how you can get involved.

1. Wear blue and yellow: Show your support by wearing blue and yellow, the designated colors for the cause, on World Down Syndrome Day. 2022 marks the 10th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly formally enacting this observance.

2. Get inspired: Read and watch as people with Down syndrome share their own stories in their own words.

3. Get involved: Find ways to make a positive difference in the lives of people with Down syndrome, in your community and around the world.
