UWHC Gala honors local citizens and organizations for charitable works
The Hope Country Club was radiant last night with the glitz and glamor of “A Night in Monaco,” the theme of this year‘s United Way Hempstead County (UWHC) Gala. Guests were dressed in their elegant best to attend the fundraising event and the gala’s planning committee did not disappoint. (Chauffeured rides from parking to the red-carpet entrance were an especially nice touch.)

The entire venue was decked out in the refined decor one might expect of a night on the French Riviera, and the meal catered by Big Mac’s held true to theme by providing fine dining for guests before the awards ceremony, which in itself was a particular highlight of the evening.

Hempstead County 4-H was named 2024 Agency of the Year for their “remarkable vigor and dedication,” and Gala & Golf Co-chair Shelly Short announced the honor. She said,
“They have empowered young people to become confident leaders and responsible citizens, helping them discover their passions and develop essential life skills. Whether it's through innovative agricultural initiative, environmental stewardship projects or community service endeavors, this agency has consistently gone above and beyond to meet the needs of our community.”

Terrie James and Betty Wingfield accepted the accolade on behalf of the organization, and in a separate interview they shared with SWARK.Today their heartfelt appreciation for the honor. “We were both so shocked and it’s such an honor,” James said. Wingfield seconded the sentiment and said, “Yes, I was so surprised and it’s so exciting!”

Dr. Brent Bennett was named the 2024 Paul Henley Volunteer of the Year which was announced by UWHC President Dr. Carol Ann Duke. She described Bennett as “a remarkable individual whose dedication and commitment to our community have truly made a difference.” Duke elaborated further: “His contributions extend beyond the walls of any organization. They are felt in the lives he touches every day, from organizing health fairs to providing free medical services to underserved populations, and to overseeing end-of-life care. His dedication is a testament to the profound impact that one individual can have.”

When asked his reaction to the award, Bennett said he was surprised and honored, but that the accolade was not his alone. “I think this award really goes to all the people who help me every day. All of these people who help me do all the things I do are really the ones who deserve it.”

Grace Kirkpatrick was named 2024 Woman of the Year for her work with Hope’s First Choice Pregnancy Resource Center. The award was announced by UWHC Executive Director Gina Perkins who said of Kirkpatrick “Her commitment to this ministry is more than a job, it's a calling. She has helped countless women become the best mothers they can be, always offering her support, guidance, and love. Your work through Hope's First Choice has left a lasting impact on so many lives.” In Kirkpatrick’s short interview with SWARK.Today after the ceremony, she said “I think it’s a very great honor, and I greatly appreciate it.”

Glenn Woodruff was named 2024 Man of the Year, announced by UWHC Past-President and Gala Co-Chair Linsey Kirkpatrick. She began her poignant homage to Woodruff, who passed in April of this year, by saying, “Tonight, we honor the remarkable life of a truly inspiring individual. As we reflect on his legacy, we remember a man whose dedication, hard work and unwavering spirit left an indelible mark on our community and significantly improved the lives of those around him.”

Accepting the award on Woodruff’s behalf were his wife Tammy Woodruff and daughter Jillian Woodruff. They shared their thoughts about the touching tribute with SWARK.Today. “Community was number two in my dad’s life behind me and my mom," Jillian said. “It’s comforting to know that while he may be gone, pieces of him are still here.”

After the awards, those behind the gala scenes were recognized for their hard work and effort. Chair Amanda Lance, Co-chair Linsey Kirkpatrick, and Co-chair Shelly Short were honored for their efforts to put on this event that raises funds for Hempstead County charities. At the time of the dinner, Lance announced that $45,000 had been raised so far, and she thanked all the donors and sponsors who helped make it happen. Lance also announced that next year’s Gala Committee chair will be Shelly Short.

After the dinner and awards ceremony portion of the evening that was held on the Country Club lawn, guests headed inside for the remainder of the evening. “A Night in Monaco” continued with DJ Stanley, a casino, a raffle, an auction, and much more. With the raffle, auction, and tournament still to go, there are no final numbers yet regarding final proceeds of the event, but one thing remains certain. Many gala guests could be heard exclaiming that the third year for this event was the best one yet. And some are already eager to see what next year’s UWHC Golf & Gala will bring.
