Veterans Parade enlivens late Friday afternoon in Hope
At 4:00 p.m., just as scheduled, the sirens of Hope and Hempstead County police and fire vehicles began to sound and the first Veterans Day Parade in 22 years began to roll up South Elm.

An estimated 71 groups registered to be a part of the proceedings, including the above mentioned emergency units. But parade goers could also see the Hope Superband, Scout Troop 5, Grand Marshals Colonel David Lively and Army Sergeant and American Legion Post Commander Herbert Ross, as well as many local businesses and agencies.

About three floats were devoted to the veterans themselves, with one float provided by the Civitan Club to feature women veterans.

Hope City Director Mark Ross, an Iraq War veteran who was on the committee to plan today and tomorrow's activities said, "I just want to thank everybody, all the businesses and the law enforcement officers that showed up today for our first Veterans' Parade that we've had in over 22 years. I think it was very nice for the public to be out on the streets and salute and welcome our veterans.

It's only one percent of our nation's population serves in our United States military, and it's really great when your hometown comes out and supports the veterans the way they did today. And I just want to thank everybody."

Tomorrow, starting at 11:00 a.m., a ceremony will take place honoring veterans at the old Hempstead County courthouse. Afterward, a luncheon will be held. Veterans and their spouses will be served free Lions Club catfish meals. Others who want a meal can acquire one for just $10.
