"It's been a long season, but this weekend is a chance for us to do what we we've wanted to do since the start of the season, we can't get down, we just have to play hard," Baylee Pogue said as she spoke on the teams road to the tournament. As mentioned earlier, there have been some highs and lows this season, as this group is a young unit. With 4 starters graduating last season, this was set to be a "building" year, but this program wants to be known for reloading rather than rebuilding. They definitely have the talent to do so, with senior Gracy Martin, juniors, Baylee Pogue, Addy Peek, Katie Holland, and sophomores Silbi Jones and Kynlee Glass. The roster has 4 freshman on it, including libero Heaven Garcia, who was given the task in the summer, and has seized that opportunity and has done extremely well at the position. Also, Laila Santifer, Savannah Fields, and Brailyn Almand have seen big minutes this season. Each of these players bring something different to the table and that is going to be what it takes to win this Friday. Very talented roster.Â
Junior Addy Peek spoke on the growth of her team this past week, "We've all grown together, helping each other out and getting to where we are now." Peek also spoke on her senior teammate Gracy Martin, "She is kind of like the hype of the team, she brings a lot of energy." Martin is a returning starter off of last years State Runner-Up team and is looking forward to her last State Tournament, "Winning is definitely the goal and the younger ones gaining some big experience this season should help them later on down the line as well."Â
If GMCS plays their best games, they have a really good shot to win it all this season. The vibes were high in practice this week and they're all looking forward to the opportunity. Freshman Libero Heaven Garcia spoke about her team and the opportunity they have in the tourney on Wednesday, "I'm really excited, we're trending in the right direction, we've gotten better, we're still learning and growing and that is what is exciting is that we're not done improving and getting better." Their best games I believe are in front of them and that is going to be what it takes to get to where they want to be, which is State Champs. The talent level is there, if they bring intensity, and keep a positive mindset, their goal of a title is definitely attainable. GO VOLLEY SAINTS!!!
