Westerman Column: Ushering in Two Major Victories

Westerman Column: Ushering in Two Major Victories

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court ushered in two significant wins for American taxpayers and students.

First, the Supreme Court overturned affirmative action in college admissions and ruled that students should be admitted based on merit, not the color of their skin. American education was built on the principles of excellence, fairness, and equality of opportunity – the Supreme Court’s decision in this case confirmed that.

Next, the Supreme Court invalidated President Biden’s student loan forgiveness scam. The court ruled that Biden unlawfully legitimized this excessive executive overreach in a failed attempt to deliver on empty campaign promises. President Biden got the hopes up of millions of Americans when he promised to forgive their student loan debt – he knew the whole time that he would never be able to follow through on this promise constitutionally. Without Congressional approval, President Biden did not have the authority to spend hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars to pay off debt disproportionately held by the wealthy.

When the President announced the student loan forgiveness plan (without approval from Congress) last August, it was estimated that it would cost $400 billion…. or roughly $2,500 per taxpayer. Now, SCOTUS has confirmed that this action is unconstitutional – and hardworking Americans will not have to pick up the bill for the 13% of Americas with student loan debt.

I applaud the Supreme Court’s decisions in both of these cases. The fight doesn’t stop here on either of these issues. I’ll continue to work with my Republican colleagues to improve educational opportunities for American students and continue to fight back against the Biden Administration’s egregious overreach into taxpayers’ pockets.
