Clergy Appreciation Week proclaimed in Hope

Hope Mayor Steve Montgomery, surrounded by members of the Hope Civitan Club, signs a proclamation declaring the week of February 3-9 as Clergy Appreciation Week in Hope. Clergy Appreciation Week has been an international project of Civitan since 1963, honoring local leaders of all faiths for their dedicated service to their communities, inspired by the story of four Chaplains. On February 3, 1943, four military chaplains—one Methodist, one Catholic, one Jewish, and one Reformed minister—sacrificed their lives in service to others on board the USS Dorchester, a troop transport ship hit by a torpedo in route to Greenland. The four chaplains removed their own life jackets to give to other passengers and locked arms in prayer for the safety of others as the ship sank.
