John Compton, of Hope, said he was driving west on 3rd at around 5:25 p.m. when he started crossing the tracks. Compton, who lost his hearing due to a fever when he was 2-years-old, said he didn’t notice the train until it was too late to avoid it. Compton said the train did try to stop and witnesses said the train did sound, but Compton was unable to hear it and there are no lights at the crossing.
