Garrett Girls varsity hoops celebrate with 56-29 win

Friday victory gives Lady Saints momentum into break

Amid the pageantry and pregame ceremony of Homecoming and Queen Hannah Lloyd’s court, both of Garrett’s Varsity Girls and Boys Basketball teams enjoyed rousing victories in final contests before this week’s Thanksgiving break.
The two teams both claimed victory over the teams from Southwest Christian Academy from Little Rock in decidedly different fashions, the Lady Saints, 3-4, overpowering the Lady Lions 56-29, while the Saints boys varsity didn’t pull away from the upstart Lions until the final minutes in a 75-70 thriller.
Coach Rachel Foster saw her Lady Saints, trying to recharge after key losses to graduation, never miss a beat Friday taking a 12-2 lead after the first period, expanding to a 19-10 lead at halftime, before blowing the game away in the third period on the strength of three straight three-point shots. At the end of the third period, the score stood at 37-18.
The only thing that slowed the Lady Saints down was a mishap with a mop bucket by a referee that resulted in a 20-minute game delay. Once the mess was cleaned up — literally — the game resumed but the shell shocked Lady Lions never recovered as Garrett’s varsity girls put more than enough distance between themselves to claim a 17-point victory.
The Lady Saints roster on Friday was loaded in more ways than one as nearly half the team featured members of the homecoming court presented earlier, including its 2018 Queen Hannah Lloyd as well as seniors Becca Still and Jillian Woodruff. Another member of the court, sophomore Libby Tyson, was also playing Friday night.
The rest of the 2018 Lady Saints basketball team includes Kennedy Hamilton (Fr.), Claire Fry (So.), Anna Kate Childress (Jr.), Marie Akard (So.), Whitley Richards (Jr.), Raley Sullivan (So.), Sophy Tyson (8th), Katie Beth Alexander (8th).
