Guests were greeted with coffee, juice, and a generous spread of refreshments prepared by Hamilton Haven volunteers. As attendees visited and connected, the morning offered more than fellowship. It provided a meaningful look into a mission that continues to impact lives across the region.
Speaking on behalf of the organization, Assistant Director Christy Higginbotham shared the heart behind Hamilton Haven and the journey that brought it to life alongside Executive Director Michelle Rhodes.
“What started as a vision for a place of housing has grown into something far greater,” Higginbotham said. “Since opening in April 2020, we have had the privilege of serving more than 30 families, representing over 80 individuals. These are people facing real, overwhelming circumstances, and sometimes, that could be any one of us.”
Hamilton Haven refers to those they serve as “neighbors,” a term intentionally chosen to reflect dignity and equality. The organization provides short term housing for individuals and families navigating hardships such as displacement, financial strain, or unexpected life events.
“Our goal is to offer a place of refuge when the heart is overwhelmed,” Higginbotham said. “You can see the difference in people within just a day or two. They come in carrying so much stress, and then you begin to see that relief settle in once they know they are safe.”
Operating as a faith based nonprofit, Hamilton Haven relies heavily on community support, including local churches, volunteers, and donors who give their time, resources, and talents to sustain the mission.
“This work truly belongs to the community,” Higginbotham added. “We could not do what we do without the people who believe in it and support it.”
The organization is currently in Phase Two of its growth, working toward the completion of an additional housing unit. The new space is expected to allow for more extended stays while also addressing practical needs like storage, which is currently being managed out of volunteers’ homes.
Though occupancy varies, Hamilton Haven remains a vital resource, often receiving waves of requests for help during times of increased need.
The Community Coffee concluded with an open invitation for attendees to learn more, get involved, and continue supporting a mission rooted in compassion and care.
