Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, is the national holiday to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. Juneteenth Freedom Day originated in Galveston, TX in 1865 and has long been referred to as African American Emancipation Day until more recent years. The day is observed to honor the triumph of the people as they no longer suffer the cruelty of slavery.
