(WASHINGTON, Ark.) – Historic Washington State Park will open a new exhibit entitled “America 250: Washington’s Story is America’s Story” on Saturday, May 23, at the park’s 1874 Visitor Information Center, 100 SW Morrison St., Washington. The exhibit will be up through the end of the year.
Washington is known for significant moments in Arkansas and American history— from its role as the “Home of the Bowie Knife” to serving as the Confederate State Capitol of Arkansas during the Civil War. Its streets carry the names of prominent American figures, such as George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. The town’s residents helped establish institutions, including the Arkansas Grand Lodge of Free Masonry, the Prince Hall Lodge of Arkansas Freemasonry, and the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church. Washington has been home to notable leaders, including an Attorney General of the United States, two Arkansas Governors, and several members of the United States Congress and the Arkansas General Assembly.
This exhibit invites you to explore 250 years of United States history, through the perspective of a small southwest Arkansas town. Like countless communities across the country, Washington’s experiences help tell the broader story of America itself. Washington’s story is America’s story.
