Hogs take down No. 6 Louisville

FAYETTEVILLE -- No. 25 Arkansas in search of a signature win this season got it on Wednesday night when they defeated No. 6 89-80 in a packed Bud Walton Arena.

Arkansas (6-2) had lost to Michigan State and Duke previously, but neither game was at Bud Walton. The Razorbacks handed Louisville (7-1) its first loss of the season. John Calipari was complimentary of the loud crowd.

"It's hard 6 o'clock here, many of our fans have to drive an hour or more just to get here but they were here," Calipari said. "Now I am saying to North Little Rock, come on out."

Arkansas will take on Fresno State on Saturday at Simmons Bank Arena at 3 p.m. on SEC Network+. Calipari was pleased his team which had trouble rebounding in the two losses beat Louisville 46-36 on the boards.

"You do understand they out-rebound people by 12 or 13 and we out-rebounded them?," Calipari said.

The Razorbacks looked to be cruising to its big win holding a 47-29 halftime advantage. However, Louisville's Ryan Conwell pulled his team to within 68-63 with 8:04 remaining in the game.

"We let them back in it with some breakdowns and open threes," Calipari said. "When you put this kind of schedule together you're hoping you can win one or two."

The Razorbacks held a good shooting Louisville team to 41% from the field and 22% from behind the 3-point line.

"What I ended up doing is putting a defensive team out there and stuck with it, just like against Duke," Calipari said.

The Razorbacks also held a big advantage at the free throw line. The Razorbacks made 27 of 35 while Louisville only had 18 attempts making 14 of them. Arkansas also had a big advantage in points off the bench 39-11.

Trevon Brazile came up huge for Arkansas scoring the first four points of the game as well as 14 in the first nine minutes of play. Brazile finished with 21 points, five rebounds, two steals and one block. Another player who had an outstanding was Florida State transfer Malique Ewin. He had 12 points and nine rebounds getting many of them when contested.

"Malique doing what he did today got me going more than the W," Calipari said.

Louisville never led in the game and Arkansas' biggest advantage was 54-34 with 17:30 remaining in the game.

Darius Acuff Jr. chipped in 17 points, five rebounds and 10 assists. Meleek Thomas added 17 points and five boards. Billy Richmond had 10 points and four rebounds.

Louisville placed four players in double figure scoring led by Mikel Brown Jr.'s 22 points, five rebounds and two assists.
