Late afternoon trip through Hope Sunday reveals treacherous roads

Late afternoon trip through Hope Sunday reveals treacherous roads
A trip at about 4:30 p.m. in a four-wheel drive vehicle down East Third, then the Bill Clinton Bypass going north, then Highway 29 North, then Highway 32 toward Oakhaven and the industrial park revealed lots of slippery places. A glance through these photos reveals both the natural beauty of landscapes and the dangers lurking for motorists not experienced with such conditions.

Intersections tended to pose great difficulties.  We nearly were stuck at the entrance to Oakhaven and could see the entrance to the on ramp to I-30 Westbound from Highway 29 was a major slick spot.  I-30 itself between Highway 29 and Hervey Street was most dangerous on the bridges. Hervey still had slush patches. At service roads to it there were drifts of frozen sleet that we had to stop and help a motorist in a van push out of. South Main appeared not to have been plowed yet.

We found at least one case of a barn collapse north of town and a couple instances of businesses that were open.  Walmart kept limited hours, having been open this morning at 8:00 a.m. and having closed today at 6:00 p.m.  Its parking lot appeared not to have been touched by a plow except for the east to west lane right in front of the store entrance.

The best news was we saw no power lines down and no trees down on the roads, not even a limb.  Power appears to be on all over the city.

The best advice is to stay off the roads.  Even walking along roadsides was precarious for this 53-year-old.
