David Gummeson, Nevada County Office of Emergency Management Director described his thought process as the precipitation there came to an end without producing an amount of freezing rain to cause power outages. “I’ve never been happier to see sleet before,” he said “The thought of getting one inch of ice would have been a nightmare.”
He said one barn and one chicken house have collapsed from the weight of the accumulated sleet, but that power outages were at a minimum in the county. He went on to assess conditions as the week progresses.
“Moving forward with temperatures not getting above freezing most of the week, I encourage everyone to travel only when it is a must. Frozen sleet is not an easy thing to remove from roads, and we will need the temperatures to warm to help release the bond with the asphalt. I predict store and offices will open towards the end of week.”
