Nevada County Quorum Court passes ordinance to continue to pay employees in emergency closings
The Nevada County Quorum Court meeting Tuesday night at the courthouse saw the court pass an ordinance to allow county employees to continue to be paid if the county judge makes a proclamation of an emergency and has to close county offices.  It also passed a resolution of assurance to Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, heard an announcement of a transfer of county funds to a different bank to collect more interest and heard reports.

The meeting in its entirety can be seen in the video just below this article.

In the absence of County Judge Mike Otwell, Justice of the Peace Herbert Coleman presided. The regular April meeting began at 5:00 p.m. with a prayer, pledge of allegiance and approval of the previous meeting's minutes.

In the period reserved for questions on the financial report, JP Willie Wilson noted that no budget lines were in the red. It was reported the jail is replacing a hot water heater, which is being funded with funds the county received from the American Rescue Plan Act.

Coleman reported that the Oak Grove grant is now "closed out." After an audit, the work was approved and deemed to be to the desirable standard.

In committee reports, Dana Fincher, 4-H Coordinator for Nevada County, said she had handed out a schedule of activities for the summer and announced the upcoming 4-H O'Rama.  JP Willie Wilson advised her to reach out to church youth ministers to help with recruiting of new members.  The senior quiz bowl team will be competing next week in Fayetteville.

JP Patricia Grimes stated the need for volunteers to join the Master Gardener club for its seminar Saturday at 8:00 a.m. at the Barn at Willow Acres at 2073 US Highway 371 West.

She also said a retirement reception will take place for Emmet Mayor Dale Booker at Nevada County Library Tuesday April 15th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

In old business, the court passed a modified version of the ordinance allowing county judges to close offices due to emergencies with staff still being paid for those days, except in the case of vacations or sick leave who would not get paid twice during these closings.  The ordinance went through successive readings and was adopted by unanimous vote. Prosecutor Ben Hale, acting as county attorney, helped answer questions about the ordinance.

A resolution was passed to provide assurance to the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality.

County Clerk Tammie Rose said research turned up an ordinance that allowed the power of moving the county's funds from bank to bank to a committee consisting of the county judge, treasurer and sheriff and collector.  This committee met and decided to move funds from an account to the Bank of Delight to take advantage of higher interest rates.

The meeting adjourned about 30 minutes after it had begun at 5:00 p.m.
