No. 7 Seed Arkansas Faces Winner of Tennessee/South Carolina in SEC Tournament Opener

By Otis Kirk

FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas will make its first appearance in the SEC Tournament on Wednesday following a weekend in Kentucky that saw them escape with a 16-12 win.

Arkansas (36-19, 17-13) enters as the No. 7 seed. They will face Tuesday's winner between No. 10 Tennessee (37-19, 15-15) and No. 15 South Carolina (22-34, 7-23). Those two teams meet at 4:30 p.m. and then face the Razorbacks at the same time on Wednesday. Dave Van Horn saw his team get the first-round bye thanks to its series win over Kentucky.

“It’s just one of those years where one team (Georgia) kind of ran away with it, but the rest of us were all in a game of each other for the most part,” Van Horn said Saturday. “It’s a league that is just really strong.

“We jumped ahead of a couple of people today that were really good. It’s deep and you can’t take anybody for granted and you have got to go get your wins while you can.”

Georgia (43-12, 23-7) won the league by three games on No. 2 Texas. Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida and Auburn also finished ahead of Arkansas. Mississippi State and Ole Miss were right on the heels of Arkansas.

Arkansas won 7 of its 10 SEC series and 10 of its last 15 games after starting league action 5-7. The Razorbacks beat South Carolina 22-6 and 3-2 in 10 innings while losing 9-4 in Columbia March 20-22. They haven't faced Tennessee this season.

“We won five out of the last six series, and we won seven out of 10 series in this league,” Van Horn said. “That’s hard to do.”

If the Razorbacks win Wednesday, they will take on No. 2 Texas (40-12, 19-10) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Arkansas hasn't faced Texas this season. All the games will be televised on the SEC Network except Sunday's championship game at 1 p.m. and on ABC.
