Over the course of the day, volunteers contributed over 194 hours of labor to bush hogging, site cleaning, and assembling new amenities to welcome guests and reenactors alike. Longtime supporter Jake Dewoody contributed the use of a bulldozer at a significant discount, allowing for the removal of invasive thorn trees and brush that had encroached on the natural prairie.
Thanks to recently purchased equipment, volunteers were able to clean and stock the off-grid
toilets, ensuring comfort for all visitors. In addition, three picnic tables were assembled during
the week, adding much-needed seating for families and spectators. None of these activities
could have been accomplished so quickly without the efforts of volunteers.
“This kind of hands-on stewardship is what keeps our history alive,” said Depot Museum
President, Paul Ridgell. “Every hour spent out here is a tribute to the legacy of those who fought at Prairie D’Ane and to the history of Prescott.”
These efforts are part of the ongoing preparations for the Civil War Days reenactment
commemorating the Battle of Prairie D’Ane, a pivotal moment in Southwest Arkansas history.
Visitors can expect living history demonstrations, period encampments, and immersive
storytelling that brings the 1864 battlefield to life. The reenactment will take place November 1
and 2 at Prairie D’Ane Battlefield Park. The admission fee is just $10 per vehicle.
