The event saw a steady and enthusiastic crowd, with many residents lining up well before the start time. While the program typically offers up to five seedlings per person, the Prescott event was particularly generous, with the Forestry Commission handing out variety packs containing between 6 to 12 trees per pack.
The variety packs included a curated mix of native Arkansas species designed to thrive in the local climate, including:
- Pecans: Known for attracting wildlife and providing a bounty of nuts.
- Sycamores: Fast-growing giants that offer massive leaves for summer shade.
- Overcup Oaks: A hardy choice that prefers well-drained conditions but can tolerate flooding.
- Shumard Oaks: A favorite for homeowners looking for brilliant red-to-orange fall foliage and drought tolerance.
Staff from the Forestry Division were on hand to provide residents with "Bare Root" planting guides. Experts reminded recipients that the secret to a successful planting is to soak the roots in water for 3 to 6 hours before putting them in the ground and to ensure the hole is wide but no deeper than the root system itself. Most importantly, new tree owners were encouraged to water their seedlings regularly for the first two years to ensure they take hold for generations to come.
This event is part of a broader campaign running through April 24, funded by a grant from the USDA Forest Service. For those who missed the event, the Arkansas Forestry Commission continues to encourage the planting of native species to improve air quality, provide shade, and enhance the natural beauty of Nevada County.
The giveaway served as a meaningful continuation of Prescott’s ongoing commitment to Arbor Day. The mottow of the day was celebrated by local organizers and attendees alike. "The cultivation of trees is the cultivation of the good, the beautiful, and the uplifting of man."
