In every community, public parks serve as vital spaces for recreation, relaxation, and connection. SWARK.Today is proud to feature the City of Prescott Parks and Recreation Department in this Service Spotlight, recognizing the small but mighty team whose hard work ensures these essential areas are beautiful, safe, and ready for all to enjoy.
The responsibility of maintaining the city's green spaces is a significant undertaking, managed by a dedicated crew of just three individuals. This team is in charge of the comprehensive upkeep of Prescott City Park, McRae Park, and the high school complex. Their daily and seasonal tasks are extensive, including mowing, weed eating, and meticulously painting the ballfields that host countless community games. Their work also extends to the popular splash pad, a favorite spot for families in the warmer months, and the cleaning and maintenance of the park restrooms. Furthermore, this department is instrumental in fostering community spirit and youth development by overseeing the city's youth football, basketball, and baseball programs throughout the year.
Leading this team is Parks and Recreation Director Carlos Van Hook, who describes the department's philosophy with a powerful sense of personal ownership. "The biggest thing for us is treating our parks like it's our house," Van Hook says. "We want to take care of it; we want to keep it clean. We want to see everything continue to grow and get better and add on more activities for the youth and adults." This commitment to not only maintain but also improve the city's recreational offerings is at the heart of everything they do.
The efforts of this department are fundamental to the quality of life in Prescott. Well-maintained parks and robust youth sports programs strengthen community bonds, promote healthy lifestyles, and make the city a more attractive place to live and raise a family.
