Election Day for both Nevada and Hempstead County is tomorrow, Tuesday May 13th. Votes will be counted after polls close Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
In Hempstead County, two contested Hope Public School Board races will be on the ballot for Zone 1 (Janice Milus v. Lakesha Jones) and Zone 6 (Nathaniel Holyfield v. Sylvia Brown). SWARK.Today interviewed the candidates for both positions in videos that can be seen at the links in this paragraph.
Uncontested elections for Blevins School Board include Zone 2 (for which Kim Cole is running uncontested) Zone 4 (Cindy Inlow Parks) and Zone 5 (James West) a few millages will also be on the ballot in the county, but the millage elections will not change whether the millage is charged to property owners. It will continue to be collected.
In Nevada County, voters will get a choice of yes or no on the proposed 3/4-cent sales tax which the county’s Quorum Court placed on the ballot for the purposes of renovating the courthouse, fixing the roof of the detention center and addressing Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality requirements at the county’s landfill.
In promoting the sales tax at a March meeting of the Emmet City Council, Nevada County Judge Mike Otwell said the 3/4-cent sales tax would replace a 3/4-cent tax that will expire in October of this year. He also said that about 60 percent of the tax would be paid for by I-30 travelers stopping to patronize businesses near the Prescott exits.
Sample ballots from both counties can be viewed just below this article.
