Katie Izzo claims silver in SEC 10,000m as Razorbacks total 13 points

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A silver medal by Katie Izzo in the 10,000m and fourth place by Devin Clark supplied Arkansas with 13 points in the first running final of the SEC Championships at E.B. Cushing Stadium on the Texas A&M campus.

Current team standings have Alabama leading with 19 points, followed by Auburn (18) and the Razorbacks (13).

Mercy Chelangat of Alabama won the 10,000m final in career best and collegiate-leading 32:21.13. Izzo posted a time of 33:17.52, which improves her position at No. 6 on the UA all-time list. Clark finished fourth with a 34:00.74.

Also racing for Arkansas were Corie Smith (35:25.49), who placed 12th, and Adeotte Vaughan (36:32.79), who finished 19th.

Qualifying races had three Razorbacks reaching the final from a pair of prelims. Tiana Wilson produced a career best time of 22.93 (0.2 wind) as runner-up in her heat of the 200, while Jada Baylark followed in third at 23.22. They ranked third and sixth overall from the three heats contested.

Wilson’s time moves her from No. 9 (23.24) to No. 5 on the UA all-time list. LSU’s Flavor Ofili won the heat in 22.64 while Alabama’s Tamara Clark claimed the top qualifying time in 22.55.

Shafiqua Maloney cruised to a 800m heat win in 2:09.11 over Florida’s Imogen Barrett (2:09.27). Georgia’s Amber Tanner posted the top qualifying time of 2:05.18. Razorback Quinn Owen ran 2:12.67 in placing sixth in the same heat as Maloney.

In the heptathlon, G’Auna Edwards did not start the 200m, the fourth event of the day, after accumulating 2,413 points with marks of 13.59 in the 100m hurdles (1,037 points), a high jump of 5-6 (830), and a shot put of 33-7 ½ (546).

Friday’s events include finals in the pole vault and 3,000m steeplechase along with prelim races.

Arkansas has five entered in the pole vault, led by collegiate outdoor leader Nastassja Campbell, and three in the steeplechase with Krissy Gear, Gracie Hyde and Logan Morris. Other Razorback vaulters include Lauren Martinez, Bailee McCorkle, Kaitlyn Banas, and Mackenzie Hayward.
