Local Teams Feel the Love as They Head to State
The Spring Hill Lady Bears hit the road to State Wednesday morning to cheers and encouragement from their classmates, friends and families. The girls posed for pictures before boarding their bus to Carlisle, AR for the 2A Girls State Basketball Tournament.
Before they hit the interstate, the Lady Bears had a couple of stops to make along the way. The girls, escorted by Deputy Billings, made their traditional pass through the Spring Hill Elementary School to high-five the grade-schoolers who cheered for the girls and wished them luck. The caravan to State then made a stop at in Hope at Amigo Juan where they were treated to breakfast.
The Lady Bears, who won the District Tournament secured their place in the State Tournament with a 2nd Place finish at the Regional Tournament. The Lady Bears play Poyen Wednesday, February 27 at 7 p.m. in the first round of the 2A Girls State Tournament. A victory tonight will put the Lady Bears against the Melbourne Lady Bearkatz in the Quarter Final on Friday, March 1 at 1 p.m.
Several other area basketball teams also have their communities cheering them on in the 2019 Arkansas State Championships.
The Blevins Lady Hornets, Nashville Lady Scrappers, Nevada Blue Jays and Lafayette County Cougars are also competing for their shot at the State Championships for their conferences in the State Tournaments this week. The Garrett Memorial Christian School Lady Saints Varsity and Junior Varsity teams played in their State Tournaments last week. The JV squad won the State Championship and the Varsity squad finished 2nd in their tournament.
The Blevins Lady Hornets tip-off at 4 p.m. in Brockwell, AR against Rural Special in the first round of the 1A Girls State Tournament. A win in the first round will put them against the Norfolk Lady Panthers Thursday, February 28 at 7 p.m.
The Nashville Lady Scrappers Tipped off against Farmington at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the 4A Girls State Tournament in Magnolia, AR. A win will advance them to the Quarterfinals against Batesville at 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 28.
The Nevada Blue Jay’s won their first-round game in the 1A Boys State Tournament in Brockwell, AR against Timbo with a final score of 72-68 and will face County Line at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 1.
The Lafayette County Cougars play their first-round game of the 2A Boys State Tournament in Carlisle, AR at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27 against the Pangburn Tigers. If they advance to the Quarterfinals, they will play Marked Tree at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 28.
