James Ammons

On January 7, 2024, God decided to answer Jamie Ammons, 78 of Prescott, Arkansas, final call to go home to be with his Lord. He fought a lengthy condition for most of the last decade, twelve years to be exact-- he would say. Over the last couple of months, he was cared for and later succumbed at a local nursing home where he was rehabilitating.

Born on June 25, 1945, to the late William Ander “Red” and Vivian Ammons in Prescott, Arkansas. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Hershel Ammons. Jamie graduated from Laneburg in 1963 and quickly enlisted in the Arkansas National Guard for a short time. Marrying Judy, his wife of 59 years, in November of 1964 allowed him to travel the country by working different construction jobs. Being on the road and living all over the United States was great, but his roots were in Nevada County. He decided to return home to help his Dad move houses and then decided to have a family. Ammons House Movers soon became his business that would provide a life for his wife and his three girls. He moved houses all over the state of Arkansas and made sure his girls knew how to escort so he could depend on them if someone didn’t show up on “moving” day.

After his health finally made him retire, then he took to his deer camp where living was peaceful, and he lived out every hunter’s dream. He was known for making the best deer meat and fried biscuits—just ask his grandchildren—Riley would eat as many biscuits as he would fry. “Yall come on down, I’m cooking deer meat and biscuits tomorrow.” And rest assured no one ever turned down that offer. He was one of the founders of the Bluff Springs Hunting Club where he loved to hunt and run his dogs. His last two puppies were his pride and joy when it came to beagle talk, Bullet and Buckshot. If there was ever a story being told about a man that loved to hunt, fish, trap, and run his dogs in Southwest Arkansas then Jamie’s name would have been mentioned---he was so well known that even the game wardens “tried” to follow him around to watch his techniques!

He was one of a kind to say the least. A man that had lots of wisdom but didn’t provide it unless you needed it. A man with a big heart but just expected you to know things without saying them. He loved his family—especially his girls and grandchildren. He loved getting to watch them play sports, but you wouldn’t find him sitting in the bleachers or the stands. He was always coaching from the wall or the fence.

Jamie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judy Ammons of Prescott. Three daughters: Stacy Jester, Kristi Robbins and Kaci Simmons (Josh) of Prescott.

Four grandchildren: Riley and Lainey Robbins, Reed Jester and Keegan Simmons all of Prescott. One sister, Mary Ann Elledge, of Blevins, and a host of family and friends. Jamie is also survived by his life long special friend, Ronnie and Karan Jones. Ronnie gave him the “son” he was never able to have and referred to Chad Jones as “Killa 2” and loved that boy like his own!

Services will be held Thursday, January 11, 2024, at Herndon-Fuqua Funeral Home in Prescott, Arkansas. Visitation will be from 12:30-2:00 with a service immediately after that. There will be no burial planned at this time.
