Officer Keith Powell

Officer Keith Powell

Keith Eugene Powell, 61, Hope, Arkansas, passed away surrounded by loved ones after a courageous journey.  Born on March 16, 1965, in Dallas, Texas, Keith lived a life defined by compassion, service, humor, and an unwavering love for people.

Keith proudly served as a police officer for the City of Hope, Arkansas, fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming a law enforcement officer. Known affectionately around the department as “Pap Paw,” Keith earned the nickname not only because he was the oldest member of the force, but because of the wisdom, care, and steady presence he brought to everyone around him.  He was deeply passionate about protecting and serving his community and touched countless lives through his kindness, empathy, and willingness to help anyone in need.

Outside of his career, Keith was an incredibly talented photographer whose work reflected the beauty he saw in the world around him. He also loved painting and had a creative spirit that shone through everything he did.  Keith was an avid sports fan and faithfully supported the Detroit Tigers and the Dallas Cowboys, often joking about his “love-hate relationship” with the Cowboys.  Music was another great passion in his life, especially the band Rush, and his enthusiasm for the band was simply part of who he was.

Keith also had a deep love for animals, and he found joy in the simple moments of life.  More than anything, Keith loved people.  He was known for his caring heart, compassionate spirit, and genuine ability to make others feel valued and loved.  To know Keith was to love him.

Keith is survived by his loving wife, Karla Whitehurst-Powell; his mother, Sara Hawkins Powell of Grand Prairie, Texas; his children, Lionel and partner Roberto Pina of Hope, Arkansas, and Corey Powell of Hope, Arkansas; the mother of his children and longtime friend, Kay Powell of Hope, AR; his stepdaughter, Amy Lawernce and cherished step-granddaughters, Kenley, Averie, and Willow Duran, all of Texarkana, TX; his sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Mike Bostic of Waxahachie, TX; nephews, Scott and Michelle Bostic, Trey and Sierra Bostic of Ennis, TX; sister-in-law, Susan Powell of Gordan, TX; niece, Olivia Powell of Arlington, TX; Uncle and Aunt, Bob and Anne Howkins of Ocean Springs, MS; along with numerous extended family member, fellow officers, and countless friends whose lives were forever impacted by his kindness and friendship.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Edward Powell Sr.; his brothers, John Edward Powell Jr. and Robert Michael Powell; and his nephew, Derek Dean Bostic.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Texarkana Hospice, whose care and compassion meant so much to Keith and his family during this time.

Though his earthly journey had ended, Keith’s legacy of kindness, laughter, service, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
