The Hempstead County Relay for Life was held Friday night at Legion Field in Hope Fair Park. The event and all the fundraising efforts tied to it are held to raise money for Relay for Life, which is the primary fundraiser for the American Cancer Society to provide support services for those battling cancer and to fund research into treatments and a cure. Sponsors of the event had tents set up with games, prizes and food for those in attendance. There were also horse rides, a bounce house and an auction to add to the family fun on what turned out to be a beautiful spring evening.
The first lap of the evening was for those who have survived their fight with cancer. They were then joined by those who have served as caretakers for those who have had cancer. The evening was topped off with a luminary lighting ceremony to remember those who have been taken by cancer.
Supporters of the event have several events throughout the spring including fundraisers, a golf tournament, pageant and Survivors’ Banquet among others. Another event still to come is the 4th annual Relay for Life Softball Tournament on Saturday, May 4. The double-elimination, co-ed tournament is sponsored by Heather Manor and will begin at 9 a.m. at Kelly Fields.
