Robert Smallwood Jr.

Robert Smallwood Jr. was born July 30, 1950, in Prescott, Arkansas to Robert Lee Smallwood Sr. and Mertie Smallwood.

Robert “Sonny” Smallwood attended McRae School where he was a star athlete. After graduating from McRae High School in 1968, he attended Ouachita Baptist University.

After moving to Chicago, Illinois Robert worked on the railroad and as a DJ; DJ Sweet Daddy Wood. On June 24, 1972, he was joined in holy matrimony to Joanne Smallwood. After 44 wonderful years of marriage, the two had seven children.

As an avid bowler, Robert spent years traveling around the United States for bowling tournaments where he and his teammates won numerous awards. Robert’s proudest bowling moments were his two perfect games and the ring and watch he had to show for it.

Robert was active in the community where he served with the Ida UpChurch Corporation, Boys to Men & Girls to Women program, Generation Next, and the Nevada County Park Commission. He was an active member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, member of the choir, trustee, and Sunday School teacher. During his 30 years with Firestone Building Products, Robert had the pleasure to become the Vice-President of the Union Board.  

Robert departed this earthly life on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas after battling Covid-19. He was preceded in death by his wife Joanne Smallwood; parents, Robert Lee Smallwood Sr. and Mertie Smallwood; brothers Otis Palmer, Napoleon Palmer Jr., and Elbert Palmer; and granddaughter, Erin Maki Smallwood.

Left to cherish his memory; his wife Sharunda Henagan; four sons, Marvin (LaKisha) Smallwood, Robert (Danielle) Smallwood III, Tracy (Nancy) Flemons, and William Smallwood; four daughters, LaKeshia (Wayne “O”) Williams, Marie Smallwood, Amanda Smallwood, and Shamiah Henagan; mother, Lorene Smallwood; seven brothers, Altha R. (Bobbie) Palmer, L.C. Palmer, Greg Smallwood, John Smallwood, Don Smallwood, Andrew Smallwood, and Jason Smallwood; two sisters Jo Ann (Arthur) Coulter and Dayvonna Smallwood; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and his Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church Family.

 Graveside service will be 11am Friday, December 11 at Deann Cemetery, Prescott, AR.  Arrangements entrusted to Hicks Funeral Home, Inc.
