A Lafayette County man is jailed and charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of his father after a manhunt and brief standoff Wednesday.
According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, Donald M. Sparrow, is believed to have shot his father, 72-year-old Donald R. Sparrow, Wednesday, April 3 after an altercation allegedly occurred between the two men.
The Sheriff’s Office said it received a 911 call at 6:58 p.m. requesting medical assistance for a gunshot wound at a residence at 328 Lafayette 114. When deputies and EMS arrived, the elder Sparrow was reportedly located and pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
Lafayette County and Arkansas State Police investigators identified Donald M. Sparrow as the suspect, issued a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) and began a search for him with the cooperation of surrounding law enforcement agencies.
According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, Sparrow was later located in Minden, Louisiana (Webster Parish) where he reportedly barricaded himself inside a hotel for two hours before surrendering to Louisiana law enforcement. He was reportedly taken into custody around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, April 4.
Sparrow is being held in Webster Parish awaiting extradition. Arkansas State Police CID is handling the investigation. At this time, Sparrow is charged with first degree murder.
