A routine trip from work to pick up her kids went topsy-turvy for a Hempstead County woman Monday when her van was struck, spun out of control and rolled on N. Hervey.
Bertha Perez was traveling north on Hervey to pick up her children right after she got off work around 3:30 p.m. when she crashed. According to Perez, she was driving her Dodge Journey on the inside lane when a man driving a Nissan Sentra pulled out of the Super 1 parking lot and struck the passenger side of her van. The impact sent Perez’s Dodge into a clockwise spin. The van struck the curb in front of Tobacco Superstore and went off the road where the front left tire struck the raised concrete parking lot and rolled. Perez’s van ended up on its wheels in the parking lot.
Perez said she was thankful she was wearing her seat belt and did not have her kids with her yet.
The driver of the Nissan left the scene with family members before a comment could be obtained from him.
Perez and the male driver of the Nissan both refused medical attention from the Hope Fire Department and Pafford EMS.
The Hope Police Department and Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office were able to keep the end-of-day traffic flowing both directions, only having to close down the inside lanes.
