Day Three of 2024 Watermelon Festival offers diversity of entertainment
In terms of real estate, day three of the 48th Hope Watermelon Festival was dominated by the Civitan Car Show. Over a hundred cars and trucks and one hearse competed for category and overall wins in today's meet, whose proceeds go to benefit people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Best Engine went to Joseph Austin. Best paint was won by Willie Harris. Best of Show Truck went to Joel Whisenhunt. Best of Show Car was won by Jonathan Zacharias.

Just to the northeast of car show territory was a popular exhibit from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission headquarters. A large dual aquarium was home to several of Arkansas' most distinctive fishes, including a Black Crappie, a Largemouth Bass, a Striped Bass, an Alligator Gar and a Blue Catfish.

"This past week this has gone out two or three times," Emily Zaner, GFC Educator and the woman in charge of seeing to the health of the fish.  "And our other one went out once. So yes, we go to a lot of different places."

The fish, she said, mostly eat only once a week. Different fish get different foods. "Our blue catfish, they will eat a lot of minnows and goldfish, and then we'll also put in some hard food, like little pellets.  Our gar are really into goldfish. The bass, crappie and bluegill, they all really like the minnows," Zaner said.

The temperature of the water has to be monitored closely especially during summers. But with today's temperatures topping out at 89 degrees, and the aquariums being under shade trees, the fish looked quite healthy and, possibly, happy.

At the Watermelon Idol competition on the Farmers Bank and Trust stage, Arnetta Bradford in her inimitable way hosted about half a dozen formidable talents as they performed before a large crowd. The judges had hard decisions to make. In the end, third place was a tie between Carl Jackson and Phil Smith. Second place went to Ginger Beck.

The first place winner and tonight's performer at the big Saturday concert and second opener for Rodney Atkins is Austin Russell from Sardis, Arkansas.
