“Get Real” Program at NHS
  • The Nevada County Extension Office hosted a “Get Real” Program at Nevada High School for Juniors and Seniors.

In a two-day program, students were given information about good money management and the difference it makes in their lives. Students drew cards to receive their scenario with their family size and a job with a set income. They were required to find their net income from their gross income, then visit twelve different stations manned by volunteers from the community. The twelve different stations required the students to make decisions based on their family’s needs and what they could afford. Once they decided, they had to write a check and balance their register at each station. Students were able to see how their choices affect their finances.

NHS also welcomed local homeschool students to participate in the program with them.

Community leaders stepped up to support this program for our Nevada County youth. A big THANK YOU is extended to the Bank of Delight, Farmers Bank, Shelter Insurance- Eli Ratcliff, University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana, Prescott Nevada County Library- Theresa Tyree, Nevada County Extension Homemakers Members- Mittie Malone, Judy Duke, and Phyllis Stewart, Nevada County Judges’ Office- Jennifer Chunn, Nevada County Master Gardeners- Brenda Barham, Nevada County 4-H Leaders- Aimee Keifer, Terra Smith, and Laura Ward, Prescott Economic Development Office, Farm Bureau- Karen Hamilton, Melvin and Evelyn Holleman, Mary Beck, Wendy Bailey, Peggy Butler, Phyllis Landes, and Chandra Kirkham for helping make this event happen.
