FAYETTEVILLE -- Hagen Smith is being rewarded for his outstanding career at Arkansas with a record-setting contract from the Chicago White Sox.
Smith, who was drafted No. 5 in the recent MLB Draft, signed Monday receiving the highest bonus ever given a left-handed pitcher. The White Sox rewarded Smith with an $8 million bonus. That topped the previous high for a lefty which was given to Brendan McKay in 2017 by Tampa Bay. The slot value for the fifth pick was $7.76 million so Smith's deal exceeded that.
Smith's deal also marks the largest bonus a Razorback has ever signed. The previous high was $5.2 million to Hjeston Kjerstad who was drafted second by the Baltimore Orioles in 2020.
The other Razorback signings announced by MLB.com Jim on Monday were second baseman Peyton Stovall (Cincinnati, $625,000), pitcher Jake Faherty (Miami, $200,000) and first baseman Ben McLaughlin (Arizona, $75,000).
Four other Arkansas players were drafted in pitcher Mason Molina (Milwaukee, 7th round) third baseman Jared Sprague-Lott (Oakland, 9th round), catcher Hudson White (Boston, 9th round) and pitcher Brady Tygart (Boston, 12th round).
