At one of them, Park Gardener Theresa Neely displayed several examples of herbal medicines available on the grounds of Washington and used to treat toothache, settle stomachs and calm coughs. At the second one, Rachel Coble, interpreter for Arkansas State Parks, showed the kids several objects used in the 19th century that few 21st century kids would recognize. These included clay marbles, candle snuffers, printers’ letters and several types of hammers.
At a third station, kids could play with 19th century toys that included a cup, string and ball assemblage, a Jacob’s Ladder, several tops and a string and disc combo. Ty Webb was the Washington State Park staff member who showed the children how these worked, then allowed them half an hour to enjoy the items.
The program was part of Hempstead County Library’s series of summer programs put on to both educate and amuse local kids.
