Kids dig through the straw and win in Watermelon Festival's Money in the Haystack
Right on the dot 9:30 a.m. at the 48th Watermelon Festival Saturday morning over a dozen kids searched through about five bales of hay for little plastic discs with dollar amounts written on them.

The big winner in the second grade and below division was Charles Sooter of Spring Hill, a five-year-old who found enough discs to add up to $7.50, which he was paid on the spot by Aley Mendoza of the Hope-Hempstead County Chamber of Commerce. In the second round, for those from third grade to sixth, Eli Smith, a fourth grader from Hope, was the big winner, paid about $9.

Mendoza said it’s an event she has done many times and it is her favorite event of the year.
