Hope Junior Auxiliary Member Serena Lemley brings two Spaghetti Supper dinners to a car just outside Hempstead Hall yesterday evening.
Starting at 4:00 p.m. yesterday, members of the Hope Junior Auxiliary began making a simple transaction just outside Hempstead Hall on the UAHT campus. One blue ticket for one complete meal of Spaghetti Bolognese, salad, breadstick and peach cobbler. But most of the time, motorists had multiple tickets and received enough meals, in their Styrofoam boxes, to need them delivered to their rolled-down car windows in bags.
Each member of the Hope JA was expected to sell 20 tickets to family, friends and co-workers for $10 each to the organization’s 60th Annual Spaghetti Supper. Member Serena Lemley, seen in our top photo bringing out meals, said the proceeds from the sales go to a good cause. “It goes to scholarships for the students in Hempstead County.” These scholarships could be up to $1,000 per year per student, with some receiving $500.
Meanwhile, back in the kitchen of Hempstead Hall about nine members were cooking the items. Four pots of spaghetti were standing by and lines of crockpots simmered the sauce. For those of us with a sweet tooth, pans of peach cobbler were standing by, fresh from being baked in the facility’s ovens.
All members of the JA are expected to serve in some capacity on Spaghetti Supper Day, with preparation starting at 9:00 a.m. and serving continuing until 7:00 p.m. JA President Aley Mendoza told me when I visited the kitchen at 4:45 p.m. that she’d been there since 9:00 a.m. herself. According to Linsey Kirkpatrick, the organization’s Vice President, the final tally of meals provided and tickets sold was 361 .
