Sunday Afternoon Accident

At approximately 3:10 p.m. this afternoon central dispatch received a call-in reference to an accident near 3580  Highway 278 East. Upon the officers arrival at they observed a 2010 Ford Fusion facing West in the West bound lane and a 2009 Mercury Mariner facing East in the East bound lane.

According to preliminary information, the 2010 Ford Fusion was traveling Eastbound when the driver was at a stop in an attempt to make a left-hand turn into a driveway. Before he could make his turn, the driver was waiting to allow a wide load semi that was traveling west to pass. The fusion was struck by the 2009 Mercury from behind, causing the Ford to spin into the West bound land.

There were two occupants in the Ford and three occupants in the Mercury. All occupants were transported to local hospitals by Pafford Emergency Services. The wide load in question continued traveling West without stopping. The accident is being investigated by the Arkansas State Police. Hempstead County Sheriff's Deputies, Southeast Volunteer Fire Department and the Hope Fire were also on scene to assist.
