Tomorrow night at Hempstead Hall Take Six, an a cappella group formed at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama in 1980 will take the stage to perform a selection of gospel, jazz, pop and R and B songs starting at 7:00 p.m.

Take 6 has won ten Grammy Awards, ten Dove Awards, two NAACP Image Awards and a Soul Train Award. The group also enjoys the distinction of having been called, “the baddest vocal cats on the planet.” He should know, having recorded “Septembro” with Take Six as the lead-off track of the From Q, With Love album (1999).

Among the other songs Take Six has popularized, according to Spotify, are “Moody’s Mood for Love,” “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “Septembro,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas/Carol of the Bells.” Numerous other holiday songs round out their top ten. Their most recent recordings are on the Raymond Scott Reimagined album, released in July. These include renditions of “In an 18th Century Drawing Room,” and “Serenade.”

The group’s members are Alvin Chea (baritone), Khristian Dentley (bass), Joey Kibble (fourth tenor), Mark Kibble (second tenor), Claude V. McKnight III (first tenor) and David Thomas (third tenor).  On November 1st, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital announced that Take 6 would be joining the Music Gives to St. Jude’s Kids. As the news release said, “TAKE 6 will be featured during Music Gives audio events and will participate in St. Jude Celebration of Hope in January 2024, which brings together music industry supporters, audio partners, media, celebrities and content creators in support of this mission.”

When you attend Friday’s concert, expect to hear a good helping of holiday songs along with Take 6’s diverse repertoire of jazz and r and b favorites. Tickets are still available.
