High school junior Khaleb Salazar, player of a low brass instrument called the euphonium, has picked up this week's Inked Threads Band Member of the Week.

Band director Chris Davis said Salazar has distinguished himself in his leadership of the low brass section, which includes trombone, euphonium, baritone and tuba players. "He comes early, stays late," Davis said. "He doesn't accept second as the best. He always wants to be the best."

The band has just returned from participating in the Cabot Invitational Marching Contest where it placed sixth overall and second within its class.  Davis said "It was a decent run, not our best run. We were second place in our class. If we would have played at our best, we would have gotten first." The band's color guard did win a first division distinction Saturday.

Davis said the contest experience is bound to help improve the performance of his group, which has a lot of first-year high schoolers this year.

The next contest for Hope is Saturday at Bryant High School. Bryant was the overall winner of the contest in Cabot two days ago. Harrison was the first-place winner in Hope's class.
