HOPE, AR – September 14, 2020

University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana Paramedic student and Phi Theta Kappa member Alan Laxton was recently selected from hundreds of nationwide applicants to receive the Phi Theta Kappa New Century Workforce Pathways Scholarship and the Dr. Richard L. Resurreccion International Public Safety Leadership and Ethics Scholarship.

The New Century Workforce Pathways Scholarship is designed for students who plan to graduate with an associate degree and enter immediately into the workforce. One winner is chosen from each state. The scholarship may be used to complete an associate degree, obtain a certification, or purchase tools or other trade-specific items needed to enter the workforce. This is the second year in a row that a UAHT Phi Theta Kappa member has been awarded this scholarship.

Alan also was awarded the Richard L. Resurreccion Public Safety Scholarship. This scholarship honors Richard L. Resurreccion, professor emeritus and Human Services at California State University, Long Beach, who is widely known for his expertise in the areas of life safety, technology, and emergency management. The scholarship is awarded to Phi Theta Kappa members who demonstrate the potential for or involvement in public safety or service while enrolled in a regionally accredited associate degree public safety program. "PTK is an outstanding organization that anyone should be a part of if they have the opportunity. It is like a family within the organization, and everyone supports one another. To have received a Phi Theta Kappa scholarship is an achievement I was not expecting to happen, but I am glad it did. I am proud to not only have received one PTK scholarship but two," Laxton said.

Alan is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science in EMT/Paramedic. He is an active member of the Beta Beta Kappa chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at UAHT. Amanda Maggio, PTK Advisor, said, "Alan is a devoted student who cares about his community and wants to make a difference in the world. I am extremely proud of him, and I'm excited that Phi Theta Kappa has recognized and rewarded his leadership skills and academic success."
