Westerman column: The First 100 Days by the Numbers

Westerman column: The First 100 Days by the Numbers

This week marks the end of the first 100 days of the 118th Congress. From day one, House Republicans were committed to bringing prosperity and common-sense policy making back to Congress, and since then, we have continued delivering on our promises to the American people.

I take my commitment to serving Arkansans seriously. Constituent services are my top priority, and since the beginning of the year, my office caseworkers have resolved over 280 cases and counting. We’ve assisted constituents with various issues related to the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Department of State. Whether it was an emergency passport request or help getting unpaid Veterans benefits, I’m proud that my team has been there for you.

Across the 4th District, I have four offices with staff working hard to connect with constituents and ensure their needs are met. My district staff has attended over 365 constituent meetings and events in nearly every county we serve. This includes personal meetings, events, and tours they completed with and without me while I was in D.C.

Up in Washington, DC, our doors are open for visitors! My office offers U.S. Capitol tours for constituents who are in town visiting. In the past 100 days, we have hosted over 100 constituents for tours in the U.S. Capitol. If you plan on visiting D.C., please do not hesitate to reach out for a tour. You can visit my website to request a tour, and my staff will help you out!

It’s imperative to me that every constituent’s voice is heard. My staff and I are always happy to answer phone calls, emails, and letters from constituents with policy ideas or concerns. In the past 100 days, my office has processed over 218,000 pieces of constituent mail. The legislative staff in my D.C. office has met with over 130 groups and individuals to hear their concerns and opinions on various legislation that will affect Arkansans. I have personally met with over 78 constituent groups to discuss policy issues.

I promised Arkansans that I would remain committed to developing and advancing common-sense, forward-thinking solutions for the 4th District. Just this past month, the House passed historic, bipartisan legislation to lower gas and utility costs for hardworking Americans. I played an instrumental role alongside other Republican House leaders to introduce and pass H.R. 1, the Lower Energy Costs Act. This bill will do exactly what it says, it will lower energy costs and boost our economy by unleashing American energy production.

Agriculture is the largest industry in the 4th District, and as such, I work diligently to protect our farmers, ranchers, and the land we have been so blessed with. I co-sponsored a resolution to reverse the flawed WOTUS rule that imposes burdensome federal overreach into water use rights for farmers, small businesses, and landowners. I’ve sponsored legislation and signed onto oversight letters to protect American farmland from land grabbing from our foreign adversaries like the Chinese Communist Party. The future of Arkansas is bright, and ensuring that fate starts with protecting our farmland and guaranteeing the industry is in good hands. As such, I’ve used my role as a member of the Congressional FFA Caucus to advocate for youth in agriculture and ensure we have bright minds at the forefront of Arkansas agriculture.

My office has also heard from many constituents passionate about protecting the sanctity of life. I’m proud that since January, I’ve co-sponsored two pro-life bills that protect the lives of the unborn, confirming that no taxpayer funds will fund abortions and affirming that human life begins at the moment of fertilization.

I could go on and on, and while these are great things to be proud of, the work is still ongoing. There is still a lot to be done, and I hope you can rest easy at night knowing that my staff and I are working around the clock to serve you and your community.

And as I said before, it’s important to me that every constituent’s voice is heard. If you have any policy concerns, priorities, or ideas you’d like to share, please visit Westerman.house.gov/contact to voice your opinion, or feel free to call any of my offices to speak to a member of my staff.
