Virgil Spruill

Virgil Wayne Spruill was born August 27, 1939 to Rhoda (Mauldin) and Frank Spruill in Gurdon, Arkansas. He was a lifelong resident of Gurdon and a 1957 graduate of Gurdon High School. It was once said that Virgil learned to print in the first grade and continued printing for seventy years. He began working at the Gurdon Times in 1957 where he was a linotype operator, newspaper and job printer, photographer and was named Editor in 1978. The paper sold in 1992, and he went to work in Arkadelphia as Printing Manager at Dan Cooks and retired as Printing Manager at Arkadelphia Printing in 2015. For many years in his spare time, he repaired typewriters, adding machines and cash registers.

Virgil grew up on Highway 67 across from the Gurdon Lake (Pond), and he loved fishing. His boat was old and had a few leaks and with just a paddle he knew that pond from top to bottom and was blessed to watch the sun rise and set many times on the pond.

Virgil began attending the First Christian Church as an infant and was a faithful member until he got married. He was an active member of Evergreen Church of God until his health failed. He held many positions in the church and was elected to the Church Board in 1963 and later became Treasurer; a job he held for 50 years. Virgil also served on the Board of Directors for the Arkansas Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rhoda and Frank Spruill and sister, Jean Spruill Martin and her husband, J. B. Martin.

Survivors are: his wife of sixty-two years, Vivian McClure Spruill; three children: daughters, Rhonda Spruill and Pam Spruill Taylor and husband, Mike Taylor; all of Gurdon; a son, Kenny Spruill and wife, Heather Brandon Spruill of Hot Springs; four grandchildren: Andy Taylor and wife, Tasha Taylor of Little Rock; Christina Taylor Kelley and husband, Josh Kelley of Benton; and Kenley and Jake Spruill of Hot Springs; three great grandchildren: Norah, Seth and Owen Taylor of Little Rock.
