Hope Tourism Commission Prepares for Watermelon Festival and Reviews Summer Events

Last night, the Hope Advertising & Tourist Promotion Commission gathered at City Hall for its monthly meeting to discuss local recreation opportunities, upcoming summer events, and long-term municipal planning. Led by Chairman Sharon Caldwell, the session focused heavily on preparing for the highly anticipated Hope Watermelon Festival and enhancing experiences for local visitors.

Parks Director/Tourism Secretary Summer Chambers provided updates on the upcoming Watermelon Festival tournaments, which are drawing substantial interest from across the region. The festival's softball tournament, starting Friday, August 7th, already has 118 teams registered, with additional teams placed on a waitlist. Chambers noted that the scale of the event is attracting national attention, with the National GSL Director from USSSA planning to attend, as well as a film crew to capture tournament footage. To support the event's ongoing appeal, the commission approved cash prizes of $6,000 for the softball tournament, $1,200 for soccer, and $500 for cornhole. Additionally, Chambers announced that she will represent the city as a speaker at the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Conference in Philadelphia this September. The commission approved funds from the travel budget to support her attendance.

The commissioners also reviewed community feedback from the "Sparks Fly in July" fireworks show held on July 4th at the Hope Municipal Airport, which saw an encouraging turnout of nearly 4,000 attendees. While final expenses of $27,390 slightly exceeded the $25,000 budget, leadership highlighted the show's positive community impact. Discussions for next year's event centered on improving the parking layout with Mayor Don Still suggesting alaterntives to make that a smoother process. Plus, Commissioner Dr. Trevor Coffee proposed that the city seek private sponsorships to help offset future costs.

Other updates on local tourism infrastructure included a public hearing scheduled for July 30th to seek community input on a proposed 50-50 matching grant to install a new playground unit at the soccer complex. The commission also approved a bid from National HVAC to replace the out-of-service lobby air conditioning system at the Hope Visitor Center. Commissioner Gary Johnson discussed the need for better directional signs to guide travelers from Interstate 30 to the historic Train Depot, and the tourism board plans to coordinate with the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT) regarding the installation of new highway signs. Meanwhile, discussions regarding a permanent shade structure at downtown's Hub pavilion were tabled to allow the city to gather further architectural drawings and structural options.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Anna Powell, President of the Hempstead County Economic Development Corporation, joined the session to provide an update on a regional trail plan. Collaborating with the Southwest Arkansas Planning & Development District, the initiative aims to develop a coordinated trail network across 12 counties. Powell explained how linking local assets into a larger regional system could attract more outdoor enthusiasts and bolster eco-tourism. She recommended establishing a county-level committee to help guide Hope's integration into the system and suggested seeking state and federal outdoor recreation grants to fund future development.
