The Curley Cubs won the meet with a total of 259.7 points, compared to second place finishing school, Ashdown Junior High, who earned a total of 161.5 points.

"It feels great," Coach Brian Glass said. "It's something we take a lot of pride in."

Glass started coaching the team in 2003 where they got runner-up in that year's district meet. The following year the winning streak began when they took home the gold, and they haven't faltered since.

"Over 1000 athletes have been involved in these victories," Glass said. "It's pretty unbelievable."

Glass credits the athletes as well as the people working behind the scenes for the team's nearly two decade long success.

"It takes a lot of work from a lot of different people," he said. "Our athletes are just hard workers and there's no way you can win that many championships without a lot of outstanding athletes and hard workers being involved with it. They just work so hard. They work hard in the weight room, they work hard on the track. It always pays off. These guys are willing to go above and beyond and do whatever it takes."

Glass says that the secret to success is how much the athletes want to keep the tradition alive.

"The secret is to just build up the tradition and get the kids to believe in it," he said. "Everybody that comes through wants to be apart of it and they don't want to be the class that lets the streak end. They take great pride in trying to keep that legacy going."

While this is the team's 17th district victory in a row, this is all over the course of 18 years thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic canceling the team's track season last year in 2020.

"The 9th graders last year were a little disappointed that they didn't get the chance to be the big dogs on the team that won their district championships," Glass said.

The Curley Cubs had an athlete place first in 14 of the 16 events at the district meet, including every single relay race. Jaylen Johnson and Jakeylon “JK” Jones were the top performers for the team earning a total of 94 points between them, Jones even scoring the most points out of every athlete from all seven schools in attendance.

"Our track program is a top-notch program and we're super proud of it," Glass said. "We'd love to keep the tradition going every year."

Many of the freshmen helped lead the senior high team to victory at their own district meet, earning them their 15th championship in a row. This upcoming Tuesday, May 4, Johnson will join the senior team again to compete in their relay races at state. Jones along with fellow freshman Pierce Yates will also be at the state meet as subs.

"We're looking forward to this upcoming State meet and to keep our streak alive there for the senior high," Glass said. "We're hoping to win our 4th state meet in a row."
