[HOPE, ARKANSAS] On the third Monday in January, our nation commemorates the life, memory and legacy of the great civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service (MLK Day) is the only federal holiday that is also designated by the U.S. Congress as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” With the blessing of elders and griots, the Hempstead County commemoration is expanding to two days–Sunday, January 14 and Monday, January 15. Sponsors and organizers include NAACP 6012B, Hope-Hempstead County Unit and Visibility Outreach Touch Engage (VOTE SoAR).
Neighbors of all ages, abilities, backgrounds and ethnicities are welcome to participate. Call or text Marsha White, 1st Vice President, NAACP 6012B Hope-Hempstead County at 870-777-8534 or 870-703-8534 or email [email protected] to volunteer and sign up for the march/parade, tailgate, and resource fair.
The commemoration of the MLK Day of Service is a call to act on Dr. King's legacy of social justice and equity and recommit by volunteering to serve others.
