[Hope, AR] — August 7, 2024 — The NAACP 6012B Hope-Hempstead County Unit is proud to share its active participation in the recent state NAACP quarterly meeting and its preparations for the upcoming annual state conference, which will emphasize the power we have to effect change in not only the federal, state and local elections but civic meetings and happenings such as council and school board meetings.
The Arkansas State Conference of NAACP convened in Texarkana in July to give its members and leaders from across the state an update on the state of play with state and national politics. The 6012B Unit was represented with seven of its members, President Sylvia C. Brown, Lasonia Standoak, James ‘Bug’ Carrigan, Carla Love, Daronda Williams, the Honorable Stacie Mitchell-Gweah (Mayor of Stamps), Donnie Centers and Sheila Jones.
The local convening came on the heels of the 115th National NAACP conference held in Las Vegas, NV. Barry Jefferson, Arkansas State Conference president, shared the meaning behind the national conference theme “All In”: “When we say we’re All In, we reaffirm our commitment to using our collective ingenuity, creativity, and strength to continue the fight for civil rights and social justice.”
At the national Conference Derrick Johnson, President/CEO of the organization, charged us to remember, “This election was never about a person or a party. It’s about the policies that impact our lives every day.” Johnson continued, “Members, advocates, and allies know that a change in presidential candidates does not change our mission this election season: to elect officials who will pave the way for the equitable future we all deserve - and defeat those who aim to reverse decades of progress.”
“Our involvement in the state meeting was a testament to our commitment to advocating for civil rights and social justice in our backyard, block, and our towns,” said Sylvia C. Brown, President of the 6012B Unit. “We are more determined than ever to ensure that every voice is heard and every vote is counted in the 2024 election and in all levels of our civic institutions.”
Arkansas NAACP Branches are gearing up for the 79th annual state conference, set to take place Friday, September 20 - Saturday, September 21 in the State Capitol of Little Rock. This year’s conference theme is "Bringing the Power to Arkansas," reflecting the pivotal role that personal engagement and involvement plays in politics, civil rights, and community activism.
